Fruit is one of the simplest, least controversial parts of a healthy diet — almost every tradition agrees it should be eaten generously. The one point of genuine debate is timing.

The traditional view on timing

Naturopathic tradition holds that fruit digests fastest of all foods and is best eaten on an empty stomach — morning, or between meals — rather than immediately after a full meal, where it is thought to ferment behind slower-digesting food rather than pass through cleanly. This is a traditional position rather than one with strong controlled-trial evidence behind it, but it costs nothing to try and many people report feeling better for it.

What is well established

What is well supported is simpler: eat fruit whole rather than as juice wherever possible, since juicing strips out the fibre that slows sugar absorption, and favour local, seasonal fruit over the same imported fruit year-round.
