Gas and acidity are two of the most common complaints people write to me about, and usually respond well to small, boring changes rather than anything dramatic.

What commonly helps

Eating more slowly and chewing thoroughly; not talking while eating (this is not superstition — it means swallowing less air); avoiding large meals late at night; identifying and reducing any specific trigger foods (these vary by person — common ones include excess dairy, fried food, and carbonated drinks); and a short walk after eating rather than lying down immediately.

When it is more than occasional

Occasional gas and acidity respond to the above. Frequent or severe acidity, or any acidity accompanied by weight loss, difficulty swallowing, or blood in stool or vomit, needs a doctor's attention rather than home management — these can be signs of something that needs proper diagnosis.
