Ayurveda calls digestive fire agni, and treats it as the root of most other complaints — food that is not digested well is held to become a source of toxins (ama) rather than nourishment, whatever its quality on the plate.
Modern medicine would put this differently but arrives at a similar practical conclusion: poor digestion genuinely does show up as fatigue, skin problems, low immunity and mood changes, not just stomach discomfort, because so much of nutrient absorption and immune activity happens in the gut. Treating digestion as a foundation rather than an afterthought is good advice by either account.
Eating at regular times, not overeating, chewing thoroughly, and not drinking large amounts of cold water with meals are the basic traditional recommendations — unglamorous, but they are also where most people find room for real improvement.
