“Detox” is the most oversold word in natural health, and also points at something real. Both things are true and it is worth separating them.
The body already has a detoxification system: the liver, kidneys, gut, lungs and skin, working continuously. No commercial product has ever been shown to improve on it. When investigators have asked manufacturers of detox products which toxins their product removes, they have generally been unable to name one.
Colon cleansing deserves particular caution. There is no “impacted faecal matter” lining a healthy colon. Colonic irrigation and coffee enemas have caused electrolyte disturbance, bowel perforation and deaths.
People genuinely feel better after a retreat, and the reasons are not mysterious. For a week or two they stop drinking alcohol, stop smoking, eat simple fresh food, sleep enough, walk daily, get sunlight, come off screens, and are looked after. Any one of those would help. Together they are substantial.
The benefit is real. The explanation offered for it usually is not. Nothing is being flushed out; you are simply living well for once, and your body is responding as it always would.
India's better-known nature cure and Ayurvedic centres — the Gandhi tradition at Uruli Kanchan, the government-recognised Ayush institutions, the established Kerala centres — operate under real regulation. Choose that kind.
Therapeutic fasting is covered in full on the cleansing page, including who must not fast.
One term worth clarifying, because it is often misused: an elemental diet is a specific medical treatment — a pre-digested liquid formula of amino acids, simple sugars and fats, prescribed and monitored by a gastroenterologist or dietitian for conditions such as Crohn's disease or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. It is not a cleanse and it is not something to attempt on your own. If you have seen it recommended as a do-it-yourself detox, that is a misuse of the term.
This site is a personal account and a record of traditional practice, shared for information. It is not medical advice, not a diagnosis, and not a treatment for any disease. I am not a doctor.
