Prana is the Sanskrit term for life force — the same idea as qi in China and ki in Japan. Traditions built on it hold that this energy can be sensed, directed and replenished.
Pranic Healing was systematised by Choa Kok Sui, a Filipino-Chinese teacher, in the 1980s, and is widely taught in India. The practitioner does not touch the patient. The method involves scanning the energy field with the hands, sweeping away what is described as diseased energy, and directing fresh prana to the affected area, often through the chakras.
Related systems include Reiki, developed by Mikao Usui in Japan in the 1920s, and Therapeutic Touch, developed by nurses in the United States in the 1970s.
Underlying all of them is pranayama — the yogic breath practice described on the air element page — which is the oldest and best-evidenced part of this family.
No study has demonstrated a measurable human energy field, and controlled trials of energy healing have not shown benefit beyond placebo. One frequently cited experiment was designed by a nine-year-old American schoolgirl, Emily Rosa, who tested whether Therapeutic Touch practitioners could detect her hand behind a screen. They could not do better than chance. It was published in a major medical journal in 1998.
What people do reliably receive from a session is quiet attention, calm, touchless care and unhurried time from someone who is concentrating entirely on them. That has genuine value in distress, and I would not dismiss it. It is simply not the explanation usually given.
Pranic healing itself is physically harmless. The danger is substitution. Anyone who tells you that energy work can treat cancer, tuberculosis, diabetes or heart disease is wrong, and following that advice costs lives.
Use it, if you wish, as comfort alongside treatment. Never instead of it.
This site is a personal account and a record of traditional practice, shared for information. It is not medical advice, not a diagnosis, and not a treatment for any disease. I am not a doctor.
If you are unwell — and especially if you have a serious illness such as cancer, diabetes or heart disease — please stay under the care of a qualified physician. Nothing here should replace or delay that care.
